Help, I think I'm an Anglophile

The huz (h/t Tenaya Darlington for that exponential improvement on the unbearable "hubby") and I were discussing our favorite TV shows.

"Keeping Up Appearances," he said.

"The Thin Blue Line," I said. "'I blame those terrible refrigerator magnets!'"

"Are You Being Served?," he reminded me.

"Blackadder," I said.

"That goes without saying," he chided, then continued, "As Time Goes By."

"Red Dwarf," I said. "Let's watch Back to Reality right now."

"You know what would make 'Back to Reality' even better?" he said.

I said, "A crossover with..."

"DOCTOR WHO!!" we both yelled.

Isn't that frightening?

But it's okay, because the huz grew up in Hawaii, so his total all-time favorite show is Shadow Warriors, the Japanese ninja drama from the early 1980s. You think the Doctor and Rose is a tragic love story? Oh, my friend. Try Hattori Hanzo and the doomed Okou.

"Thank you, Hanzo, for drinking with me tonight. And tomorrow...I will kill you."

They don't make 'em like that anymore.

I'm here to tell you, want an instant shortcut to 80's popcult cred with someone in Japan? I'll mention KAGE NO GUNDAN there and every time I get the look that says "oh, damn, you aren't some anime-come-lately poseur."

Savannah:

I hope they release the other seasons on DVD here. I really enjoyed watching it with Teh Huz. The story of Okou and her blind sister was just amazing.

rfkj:

I hope so too.

Then again...I wish I could watch "Tokyo Housewives" again, so some of my pop culture cred may be absorbed by that.

rfkj:

Also...when I was in high school, my summer school acting class put on a play called "Kage No Cockroach." It was about a family of cockroaches that lived under a sink. So I might lose a little more cred.

rfkj:

Also..."Hurry up, dude!"
