We don’t have a guest room. But it dawned on me that, if we did, we could turn it into a kind of living dollhouse. “Here, this is what we’ve arranged for you. This is the tiny universe we’ve created for you.”
So now I’m fascinated and I want to have one.
I think a guest room, to really be done right, would need to have its own private bath. That way, when the guest gets in there and locks the door, s/he can heave a sigh of relief. “Now I’m alone in my tiny self-sufficient universe.”
What should this little haven look like? It seems to me that there are two major opportunities: to impress the host’s taste and personality on the guest (“This is who we are”), or to remove as much personality as possible and create a blank canvas which just focuses on comfort.
Comfort is a good idea either way, though, but here’s the thing…what does that mean? Wall-to-wall carpet, to keep the room soft and warm? Yes, but consider the allergy sufferers. Hardwood but with complimentary slippers standing by? Maybe that would be better.
If I had a guest suite to play with, I would make sure there was a cozy chair to sit and read in with its own little table and lamp, a fairly large waist-high dresser onto which you could heave your suitcase (and then proceed to live out of it, which is what I would do), and then of course the bed and bedtable. Simple, fairly plain, just a place to relax.
Of course in a few days I'll probably change my hypothetical mind completely.
That's what the imagination's for...
