This is a test of the Emergency Man System. This is only a test.

This morning I IMed my husband.

Me: How's your back?
Him: Well...it was feeling okay, so [daughter] and I went out through the garage. I hit the button to close the door and ran and ducked under.
Me: You did NOT.
Him: After that it was not feeling so okay.

Men! They do this kind of thing all the time--they get injured or in pain, and invariably, the nanosecond they start to feel less bad, they decide to do wind sprints or investigate circuit training or duck under a rapidly closing garage door.

I have a theory. When these things happen, our men are falling victim to a primitive instinct called the Emergency Man System. The EMS is testing itself to make sure that the somewhat-recovering guy could swing into action if the shit chose that moment to hit the fan.

But there is a problem. And the problem is that after the Emergency Man System tests itself, its subject is less able to respond to a putative emergency than he was before. So where is the gain?

Clearly, we need to send this application back to QA for debugging. Can anyone remind me of the intra-office procedure?
